2012 Vauxhall Astra VXR |
There are several operators in the business seriously enough hot hatch now, and this is the answer Vauxhall: Astra VXR new 2012.
1 Exterior
Vauxhall Astra VXR took a handsome three-door GTC coupe as a starting point and add more of everything. Having politeness wider flared side skirts, a gaping front lower grille and large rear bumper with exhaust on both sides. Selecting the optional Aero Pack (the majority of customers will be in accordance with Vauxhall) and you get a two-level rear spoiler, front grille upper part of the body-colored, extended side skirts and 20-inch forged alloy wheels are also lighter than the smaller 19-inch standard items. This is the most polished product VXR again, with more class than ever Astra VXR and slim enough to compete with slinky lines Volkswagen Scirocco R.
Our rating: 5
2 Interior
After a dynamic exterior, the cabin is less interesting, but that's what you tend to find with the hot version of the mainstream car. The main change is a smaller steering wheel to drive more direct, VXR sports seats, black headlining and leather details with colored stitching. A pack full leather seats are also available. Very convenient for the front passenger, but rear occupants get a very limited view of the action and can find a seat tightness. The lack of a touchscreen (now standard in some competitors) in the center console also means there are more buttons to find out from the ideal. Those front seats really hold you in place though, and the cabin was surprisingly smooth when you are not going for it.
Our rating: 3
3 Practicality
The dashing Astra VXR has moved a step away from that rival the Focus ST, because the car is available as a five-door hatchback or estate car - give a definite edge where practicality is concerned. Astra has a 380-liter boot, which beat Scirocco and Megane Renaultsport, but has a high loading lip that can make the goods more difficult to load. There are plenty of storage areas in the car. We would heartily recommend rear parking sensors as poor rear visibility, but also think it is a shame they are not fitted as standard.
Our rating: 4
4. ride and handling
The first Astra VXR earned a reputation for being a bit rough, which is sometimes struggled to take advantage of the great powers. So how does a car with 40bhp more up? The simple answer is: a lot better. Engineers have discovered a new way to harness all that power, with a complex front suspension, electronic stability control and a limited-slip differential honed in Motorsport. This car still requires you to have your wits about you though - nose very quickly turn into a corner and can sniff cambers and imperfections in the road, pull gently against your hand in the process. Our test drive was in the pouring rain and VXR still shot from the point with real punch. There are three driving modes: 'Standard', 'Sport' and 'VXR' which changes the character of the car. In the default mode VXR impressive comfortable and quiet, and we were more than happy to leave it selected for fast road driving. Companies 'Sport' damper, throttle response but still the same as before, while the 'VXR' make the chassis more rigid and also improve throttle response. We found the latter to be too beads for road driving in the wet, but since most owners are expected to attend a track day, it is a acceptable choice.
Our rating: 4
5. performance
Only five years ago, the idea of a 280bhp Vauxhall Astra you can buy at your local dealer, will seem pretty far-fetched. It's just shy of the poke that you get in the car racing BTTC, for God's sake. For a time, also make the hottest hot hatch, with a zero to 62mph sprint of 5.9 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph. Throttle has a useful long journey, which encourages you to meter the flow of electric current - drive like hooligans and it is possible to rotate the front wheel in the first two gears. In third with a turbo work hard, there is really addictive rush of acceleration, accompanied by the whirring of industrial and growl like no other car.
Our rating: 5
6 Cost of Running
With a combined fuel economy of 34.9mpg and emissions of 189g / km CO2 VXR more than 10 percent greener than its predecessor, despite the increase in power. Those are impressive figures considering strength offered, but you should be careful driving to get there. During part of our testing trip computer showed less than 20mpg. With Vauxhall plans to sell more than 1,000 Astra VXR every year, the demand must be high, keep up the residual value. The service charge will also be very competitive.
Our rating: 3
7 Reliability
The level of engineering know-how and high-end work in the Astra VXR fill you with confidence. Is with Sachs dampers, limited slip differential is from Drexler and Brembo brakes - all of these companies have impressive racing pedigree. The machine also has been charged 10,000 laps Nurburgring Nordschleife race pace, which is equivalent to 180,000 miles of road. The fact it is based on one of the best-selling model in the UK, should make the parts and labor is easier to source and better value.
Our rating: 4
8 Security
With six airbags, advanced electronic stability program and the shell is very strong, VXR is one of the safest cars in its class. And, as a five-door hatchback Astra GTC scored the maximum five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
Our rating: 4
9. Equipment
Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, adjustable suspension, cloth sports seats, DAB digital radio, USB input and temperature control. There are several package options available, including the VXR Aero Pack - which adds larger wheels, spoiler, and side sills - and VXR Seats Leather Pack, which also adds heated and adjustable front seats more. A Seat Performance Pack adds the same level seat adjustment, but without skin. Bi-Xenon and LED daytime running lights is an option, such as rear parking sensors, tinted windows, metallic paint, uprated infotainment (with sat-nav) and metallic paint.
Our rating: 4
10 Why buy?
Not only check the box where looks are concerned, this VXR thrillingly fast in a straight line to the top of the B challenge. It's still a bit of an animal compared to the Megane Renaultsport polished, but we kind of like it.
